Do U.S. consumers value genetically modified farmed salmon?

Genetically modified (GM) salmon is the first animal GM product approved for human consumption. Given that genetic modification in food industry a highly controversial issue, understanding consumers’ preferences vis-à-vis non-GM farmed and wild-caught important to provide insights into policy decision makings on products. We use choice experiment estimate U.S. willingness pay examine heterogeneity across levels of consumer perceptions, knowledge, attitudes. Our results show consumers are willing significantly less than or salmon, suggesting their lower valuation salmon. Heterogeneity exists consumers. Consumers who more concerned about fish terms health safety, environmental sustainability, welfare, those report higher subjective knowledge GM, having negative attitude towards technology place value require larger price discount if fresh frozen. study draws implications competition between players labeling rules sustainability certifications
